墨门 / The Mohist Community is a secular philosophical community. We are followers of Mozi, not as a deity, but as an artisan, engineer, and thinker who lived twenty-four centuries ago and asked questions still worth answering: How does everyone get looked after? How does responsibility end up in capable hands? How do you do right when no one is watching?
We call ourselves Mohists. You need no particular background to become one: no degree, profession, nationality, or belief is asked about. You only need to be willing to read the Mozi, to look after one person you did not choose, and to sign the one-sentence 非攻 pledge.
What we do
Every week, all Mohists read the same chapter of the Mozi on a shared schedule (每周一篇) and meet for one hour in their chapter (墨社): reading, a short 墨辩 debate, a three-tests review of last week's practice, and this week's assignments (职). Every Mohist has a care-pair partner (兼爱结对) and checks in at least once a week.
Every month, the chapter holds a council, deliberates openly on its rules, funds, and assignments, and publishes the care fund's accounts. Disagreement is entered in the record as written dissent.
Twice a year, delegates from every chapter gather for the 兼爱大会, the assembly: to consider amendments to the Handbook (墨者之法), to elect or hold to account the 鉅子 (Juzi, the elected head of the Community) and the council, to publish the full accounts, and to review the year's three-tests goals.
Beyond that, chapters run 科技堂, a hands-on science program for children; volunteers form the 非攻 Corps, which helps people in disaster and conflict; and those with something to spare support the care fund through 有财相分 and the 节用捐.
What we are not
We are not a religion. There are no clergy, no rituals, no prayers. We ask no one to believe in Heaven or spirits, and no one to disbelieve. The chapters on 天志 and 明鬼 are read as history and used as metaphors for an objective standard and for accountability.
We are not a political party. 墨门 endorses no candidate, party, or platform, takes part in no election, and organizes no action against any person or group. Mohists as individuals may hold any political view.
We have no paid leaders. Chapter leads, council members, and the 鉅子 are unpaid volunteers with fixed terms who can be removed. All accounts are open to members.
Mozi said, "Nothing is more valuable than doing right." What we hope to do is turn that sentence into one hour a week, one goal a year, and a lifetime's habit.
