Why read the Mozi

We read the Mozi not because it is old, but because it is testable.

Twenty-three centuries ago, Mozi and his students left a book. There are no mysteries in it and nothing you are asked to believe with your eyes closed. It talks about concrete things: why the world falls into disorder, whether wars are worth fighting, how officials should be chosen, how money should be spent, and what it takes for a claim to stand up. For each of these Mozi gives a reason you can check, and tells you how to check it: look at what people did before, look at what ordinary people have seen with their own eyes, and look at whether putting it into practice helps or harms. That is the three tests.

That is why 墨门 / The Mohist Community puts this book at the center of weekly study. We are not reading scripture. We are doing something closer to engineering: taking an old design, holding it up chapter by chapter against life today, and seeing where it still holds and where it needs repair. If one week's conclusion is "this chapter no longer applies," that is a successful week.

The Mozi is not an easy read. The prose repeats itself, some chapters are damaged, and some parts (the chapters on city defense, for instance) are far from us. That is exactly why one chapter a week, over a year, is the right pace. You will find that impartial care is not a slogan but an algorithm about whose interests get counted; that opposing aggression is not a pacifist gesture but a ledger; that honoring the worthy is a personnel system; that frugality is a budgeting rule.

Bring two things with you when you read: one question and one action. The question keeps the book from turning into slogans. The action keeps it from turning into table talk. Each week's guide gives you exactly those two.

You do not need to believe anything first. You only need to open chapter 14, reach the line "let us examine where disorder comes from," and ask yourself: is he right? How would I know?
